The full Biosecurity picture - Who does what?

ERMA New Zealand Regulates the importation or manufacture of new hazardous substances, and the introduction of new species of plants and animals, including genetically modified organisms (GMOs). ERMA New Zealand checks these for possible risks to the environment and public health.
Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) MAF creates opportunity for, and manages risk to, New Zealand's food, fibre, forestry and associated industries. MAF's ACVM Group is responsible for the registration of agricultural compounds and veterinary medicines, and monitoring their importation, manufacture, sale and use on behalf of the Animal Remedies / Pesticides Boards.
Biosecurity New Zealand Biosecurity New Zealand is the lead agency in New Zealand's biosecurity system. Established in November 2004, it has been tasked with a 'whole of system' leadership role, encompassing economic, environmental, social and cultural outcomes. Ministry for the Environment (MfE) Concerned with the way in which pests, weeds and diseases affect the state of New Zealand's environment.
Ministry of Fisheries (MFish) Ministry of Fisheries Protects New Zealand's unique marine environment from the impact of introduced marine pests.
Ministry of Health (MOH) Develops and implements strategies to improve, promote and protect public health and New Zealand from exposure to health risks. For example, exotic organisms like mosquitoes could carry diseases here.
Department of Conservation (DOC) Works with MAF and the Ministry of Fisheries to protect conservation areas and threatened species from the impacts of pests and weeds.
Regional and Local Authorities Regional Councils inspect land for pests, monitor and find appropriate measures to deal with them. Regional Councils ensure owners comply with regulations, use biological control agents against weeds, and organise possum control work in conservation areas.
NZFSA - New Zealand Food and Safety Authority The New Zealand Food Safety Authority has been set up to : " Protect and promote public health and safety " Facilitate access to markets for New Zealand food and food related products NZFSA brings together the food related functions from both the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Ministry of Health into a single integrated agency.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (formerly ANZFA) Protects the health and safety of the people of Australia and New Zealand by maintaining a safe food supply.
