ERMA New Zealand encourages an open relationship with all those interested in and affected by our work. Special relationships are maintained with those agencies involved in enforcing the HSNO Act, including government departments and territorial local authorities. We also work closely with those agencies involved in decision making under related Acts.
Although ERMA New Zealand has the main responsibility for implementing the HSNO Act, a number of other governmental agencies are also involved. In particular:
Agency and Responsibility
| Ministry for the Environment (MfE) | Responsible for advising the Minister on the HSNO framework in relation to environmental policy as a whole; for administering the HSNO Act; and providing advice on regulations established under the Act. |
| Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) | Approvals by the Authority may integrate with or occur in parallel for importing new organisms, agricultural chemicals and veterinary medicines (ACVM). |
| Ministry of Health (MOH) | Approvals by the Authority may integrate with or occur in parallel for medicines. |
| New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA) | Approvals by the Authority may integrate with or occur in parallel for food. |
| Regional councils | Approvals by the Authority may integrate with or occur in parallel for resource consents under the Resource Management Act (RMA). |
| These agencies have specific enforcement responsibilities. | |
| Bioethics Council | Spiritual, cultural and community issues. |
