Q. How much do applications cost?
A. Applicants must meet all the costs that can be attributed directly to their application. This includes the cost of reviewing the application, gathering extra information, holding hearings and considering the application. Our pricing policy is in the publications section of the website and available on request from ERMA New Zealand.
Q. If I want to comment on an application, how do I get involved?
A. Under the HSNO Act applications for new organisms for release, field testing or release of genetically modified organisms, and use of a new organism in an emergency, are publicly notified. This includes public notices in the main daily newspapers and information in Perspective, The Bulletin and on our website. Information about proposals is also available at the ERMA New Zealand office. There is an opportunity to make submissions and request a public hearing. Some applications, such as those to import or develop substances or organisms in containment and low risk genetically modified organisms, do not need to be publicly notified under the Act but they are noted in the public register. To see which applications are currently in progress please go to Register Search on this site.
Q. Do all applications have to be dealt with by ERMA New Zealand, and if not do I still have to fill in an application form?
A. Small scale applications, such as for developing in containment low risk genetically modified organisms, may be delegated to Biosafety Committees in approved institutions like universities or CRIs. (Crown Research Institutions) Applicants will still have to fill out an application form and the result will be notified to and monitored by ERMA New Zealand.
