To import or manufacture a hazardous substance in containment, an application needs to be sent to ERMA New Zealand. This is for applications where the substance is not for commercial release and will be used in containment. It applies only to specified purposes. Examples include the use of a chemical as a test standard, and field trials of a pesticide. The key criterion here is that the substance can be adequately contained.
Generic approvals: ERMA New Zealand will consider applications for generic containment approvals to allow for the import or manufacture of different substances under a single approval. The containment controls must be applicable to all the substances and the approval holder must advise ERMA New Zealand of any substances that are being imported or manufactured under the generic approval.
