Group Standards

Group Standard Approvals for Hazardous Substances

A group standard is an approval for a group of hazardous substances under Part 6A of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996. Group standards will streamline the transfer of substances notified under the Toxic Substances Act 1979 (NOTS) to the HSNO regime.

Group Standards

The following group standards have been issued by ERMA New Zealand. These group standards came into force on 1 July 2006, except for the Graphic Materials Group Standard 2009 and Organic Peroxides, Toxic [6.1], Corrosive Group Standard 2009.

Group Standard Amendment

Consideration Document : Extend the exemption from labelling requirements of a group standard.

What does this mean for notifiers?

Substances notified under the Toxic Substances Act 1979 (NOTS) are now approved under the HSNO regime. Individual substances should use the HSNO Approval Number of the group standard in which the product has been allocated. ERMA New Zealand will shortly be sending a final report to notifiers, which will give a full list of their notified products and the group standard they have been allocated.

All group standards contain provisions for staged implementation, with conditions being introduced progressively. These provisions will apply to notified toxic substances (NOTS) that are transferred from the transitional provisions to the HSNO regime.
