Determine whether or not an Organism is a New Organism

If you consider that an organism is already legally present in New Zealand, but it does not appear on a statutory list as such, then no subsequent import may proceed until its status is clarified with ERMA New Zealand.

To formally clarify the status of a plant, animal or microorganism as a 'new organism', you should contact ERMA New Zealand. We will advise you on whether an application is required.

In all instances the importer will be required to provide supporting information to ERMA New Zealand. A Committee of the Authority assesses each application before making a formal determination regarding 'new organism' status.

Application Form:

Determination of whether or not an Organism is a New Organism (NO-S26) [pdf - 295 kb] or [word - 215 kb].

Note that all organism imports are subject to Biosecurity New Zealand's biosecurity requirements. Therefore you should also contact Biosecurity New Zealand if you wish to import a new organism.
